SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - Sioux City officials have announced plans for a downtown park after a local donor contributed $500,000 to the project.
Plans for the new Pearl Street Park were announced Thursday, according to the Sioux City Journal (https://bit.ly/2eOPTPf ). According to preliminary plans, the half-acre park will include green space, trees, a sensory garden, seating areas and tables.
The park is estimated to cost $517,500 with most of it financed by community leader Regina Roth’s donation. Sioux City allocated $50,000 for the park in its fiscal year 2017 capital improvement plan that will be used for design and administration costs.
“I do hope this will be the first of many pocket parks,” Roth said. “When you think about young people coming with their families to look, where do I want to settle, they look at things like bike trails and parks and green space.”
Mayor Bob Scott said that open green space in the downtown area has been a longtime desire for the city.
Parks and Recreation director Matt Salvatore said the department had worked with University of Iowa students in the Urban and Regional Planning department to create a long-term vision for the park, as part of a green space study with the city.
Construction could begin in spring 2017 and completed by the end of the year. The part will be located behind the current KCAU Channel 9 building.
Landscape architect firm SmithGroupJJR, hired by the city for the project, will appear at a public meeting Tuesday at City Hall to talk about park designs with the public.
