MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Sen. Ron Johnson and former Sen. Russ Feingold are running dueling television ads over Social Security.
The Republican Johnson launched a spot Wednesday featuring senior citizens saying that while the Democrat Feingold claims to be for them, he voted to increase taxes on Social Security benefits.
Feingold is responding with his own spot Friday that claims Johnson supports privatizing Social Security, raising the retirement age to 70 and turning Medicare into a voucher program.
Johnson has said he’s open to all options to save Social Security from bankruptcy, and last year said it was a “shame” that then-President George W. Bush’s plan to privatize the program failed.
Johnson has since backed away from that, saying he never advocated for privatization but rather a discussion over how to save the program.
