OPINION:
Hillary Clinton’s security detail hated her so much they laughed when she broke her elbow as secretary of state in 2009.
“We sort of got the last laugh. It was kind of like payback: You’re treating us like s—t. Hey karma is a bitch! We were smiling to ourselves,” an unnamed agent told The New York Post Wednesday.
“When I first met her, we were given specific instructions: don’t look at her, don’t look at her general direction and if you need to talk to her, keep it short and stay out of her way,” the agent continued.
Mrs. Clinton took the fall in the State Department basement on the way to meet President Obama and ended up in the hospital for an operation. She was 61 at the time.
The Post’s interview with her security agent at the time mirrors what others who have worked for Mrs. Clinton have said.
Gary Byrne, a former secret security agent who was posted outside the Oval Office when Bill Clinton was president, described Mrs. Clinton as having a “Jekyll and Hyde” personality that left White House staffers scared.
Mr. Byrne, in his book “Crisis of Character,” about his time spent on the president’s detail, portrays Mrs. Clinton as too “erratic, uncontrollable and occasionally violent” to become the next president of the United States.
Mr. Bryne’s words — along with the unnamed agent who spoke to the New York Post — were vindicated with the release of FBI documents on their investigation into Mrs. Clinton’s server. Mrs. Clinton was reportedly “so contemptuous,” many of her agents quit or sought reassignment.
“This woman said Clinton treated the agents protecting her and her staff’s lives with ’contempt,’” the FBI document read.
It states: “[Redacted] explained that CLINTON’s treatment of DS agents on her protective detail was so contemptuous that many of them sought reassignment or employment elsewhere.
“Prior to CLINTON’s tenure, being an agent on the Secretary of State’s protective detail was seen as an honor and privilege reserved for senior agents. However, by the end of CLINTON’s tenure, it was staffed largely with new agents because it was difficult to find senior agents willing to work for her.
“[Redacted] claims to have had at least one conversation with Secret Service agents who experienced the same poor treatment,” the FBI notes said.
Mrs. Clinton, by all accounts, seems like a pretty nasty person to work for.
