Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine ripped Donald Trump on Thursday, saying Mr. Trump was effectively insulting democracy when he declined to say he’d accept next month’s election results at Wednesday’s debate.
“This is not a television show, folks. This is not a reality show. This is about running a country,” Mr. Kaine said at a campaign stop in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Mr. Trump declined to say Wednesday whether he would accept the results of the presidential election. On Thursday, he said he’d accept the outcome if he wins.
“Why would I want a president that says ’I’m going to keep you in suspense?’” Mr. Kaine said. “You got to do better than that.
“We cannot let this guy insult the democracy and then jump to be the head of the greatest democratic nation on earth,” he said.
Hillary Clinton leads Mr. Trump by several points in the latest Real Clear Politics average on North Carolina. President Obama carried the state in 2008 but lost it in 2012.
Mr. Kaine was appearing in the state as early voting kicked off there Thursday.
“I do not see a path to victory for Donald Trump if we win North Carolina,” he said.
“We cannot take anything for granted,” he said.
