PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Gina Raimondo is considering a plan to split the duties of the state’s top police official.

Raimondo tells WPRO-AM (https://bit.ly/2e9Rz44 ) she is looking at creating a new public safety commissioner in addition to hiring a new state police colonel.

The governor has been searching for a new superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police since Col. Steven O’Donnell retired last month. She says other states split the duties and it’s probably the right way to do it for good governance reasons.

Massachusetts and Connecticut both have separate positions for leading police and public safety, as does the city of Providence.

The Democratic governor made the comments during a Thursday interview on WPRO-AM. Asked if she’d choose a woman, Raimondo says she’s seeking the best person for both jobs.
