PHOENIX (AP) - Sen. John McCain says Americans should be proud of their election systems and must respect the decisions made by the majority of voters.
The 2008 Republican presidential nominee commented in a statement in the wake of Donald Trump’s refusal during a Wednesday evening debate to say he will accept the results of next month’s election if he loses to Hillary Clinton.
McCain’s statement released Thursday by his re-election campaign says he didn’t like the outcome of the 2008 election when he lost the presidential race. But he said he had “a duty to concede” and that he did so without reluctance.
He called a concession by a defeated candidate an act of respect for the will of the American public and he said “this election must not be any different.”
