DETROIT (AP) - A new program will provide job training to inmates to help them find employment after their release from correctional facilities in the Detroit area.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s office says Thursday that inmates will receive training in environmental construction work, culinary arts and hi-lo operation.
Duggan’s office says those areas are showing a steady or growing demand for workers and that statistics show 76 percent unemployment in Wayne County for released inmates or prisoners.
Groups of about 25 inmates will receive training each month. Those who complete the program will receive certifications allowing them the opportunity to interview for positions after they are released.
The program is funded by a $4 million grant from the Michigan Talent Investment Agency and Labor department.
