JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A former Jackson police officer will spend 27 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to stealing money from a suspected drug dealer who was actually an undercover FBI agent.
Forty-five-year-old Bryan Jones was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Daniel Jordan following a June plea to one count of interfering with commerce by threats or violence. Jordan is also ordering Jones to spend three years on probation, and wants lawyers to research whether Jones can be made to pay restitution for his crimes.
Jones is scheduled to report to prison on Dec. 5.
Prosecutors say Jones robbed agents of $4,000 in 2014 and $5,000 in 2015 during a sting operation that began after residents told FBI agents Jones was informing drug dealers of police activity and raiding their rivals.
