PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - One big business in Rhode Island is offering its employees a paid day off if they work as poll workers in the November 8 election.
The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2easFRw) that Lincoln-based Amica Mutual Insurance Co. made the offer to employees after being asked by Rhode Island Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea.
The state needs more than 5,000 poll workers for the upcoming election.
Gorbea, a Democrat, says she’s asked the leaders of a dozen large companies and higher education institutions to help out by giving willing staff members a paid day off to work the polls. Amica is the first to step forward.
CEO Robert DiMuccio says it’s important for the company to give back. It already has a program providing workers a day off for other volunteer activities.
