LAS VEGAS (AP) - A man who carjacked a vehicle at a convenience store was shot and killed by a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper after a freeway chase that ended at a Henderson auto dealership during another carjacking, authorities said Thursday.
The name of the 28-year-old suspect was withheld pending an investigation of the shooting by Las Vegas police. Trooper Jason Buratczuk said the man was from Las Vegas and died at a hospital.
The incident began Wednesday in the store parking lot near downtown Las Vegas, where a woman was hurt trying to stop the theft of her black Scion, the highway patrol said.
The woman was treated at a hospital for minor hand and arm injuries.
Troopers gave chase after spotting someone driving the Scion erratically on U.S. 95. It ended in Henderson, after the Scion left the freeway and crashed before the driver ran to a nearby Cadillac dealership.
Authorities say the man was shot after pulling someone from a Cadillac, knocking him to the ground and climbing behind the wheel.
It was the third shooting this year involving the Nevada Highway Patrol.
On Aug 26, an armed ex-felon was shot dead in Las Vegas after authorities said he opened fire while fleeing a traffic stop. One shot struck a trooper’s badge and he wasn’t seriously hurt.
On Aug. 19, a 29-year-old Reno man was shot and killed after a chase on Interstate 80 involving troopers and Washoe County sheriff’s deputies.
