CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) - MIT is forming a partnership with the Boston Medical Center and a Boston development company to build and buy electricity from a solar farm in North Carolina.
The three organizations announced a 25-year agreement on Wednesday to buy power from the planned 650-acre solar farm. The Virginia-based power company Dominion agreed to build and operate the facility, which will be called Summit Farms and is expected to be completed this year.
MIT has promised to buy 73 percent of the power generated by the project; the medical center will buy 26 percent; and the Post Office Square Redevelopment Corporation will buy the remainder. The power generated by the farm’s 255,000 solar panels will be routed through a regional power grid.
All three organizations are working to reduce their carbon emissions.
