HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency to work with the state to help Connecticut homeowners with crumbling foundations.

In a letter sent Wednesday, the Democrat asks FEMA to create a field office in northeastern Connecticut. He says FEMA could then assist the state in testing 34,130 homes at risk.

Malloy says his administration previously asked FEMA for assistance but was told in April the crumbling foundation issue did not appear to constitute an emergency or major disaster.

Malloy contends the “potentially catastrophic damage” appears to be the result of a natural disaster - specifically the reaction of a naturally occurring mineral to oxygen and water. Officials have traced the problem back to a concrete mix containing the iron sulfide mineral from a Willington quarry.
