ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The University of New Mexico is bracing for changes to labor standards that will make hundreds of employees eligible for overtime.

The Albuquerque Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2dlc6n5 ) that a U.S. Department of Labor mandate made earlier this year raised the threshold for an employee to be salaried - and therefore ineligible for overtime pay - from $23,660 annually to $47,476 annually effective Dec. 1.

Under changes set to take effect Nov. 12 at UNM, about 860 employees will become nonexempt and eligible for overtime pay. Another 50 will receive pay increases so they can be over the threshold for salaried workers.

UNM Human Resources Department Director Dorothy Anderson says meeting the new requirement will be a budgetary challenge, especially as UNM is looking for ways to cut costs amid budget woes.
