Hollywood actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio has his eyes set on turning the 1990s cartoon “Captain Planet and the Planeteers” into a live-action movie.

It has been announced that Paramount and the actor’s Appian Way Productions are teaming up for the project. A first-look deal was reportedly signed in March.

“Captain Planet and the Planeteers” was spearheaded by media mogul Ted Turner in the 1990s. The show ran for 113 episodes from 1990 through 1996 and featured a group of kids who tried to stop evil businessmen from polluting the environment. Their collective efforts and magical rings allowed them to call on “Captain Planet” in dire circumstances.

Sources told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday that Appian Way Productions’ film will feature Captain Planet as “a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him.”

“The scientific consensus is in and the argument is now over,” Mr. DiCaprio said Oct. 3 at the White House during its South by South Lawn festival. “If you do not believe in climate change, you do not believe in facts or in science or empirical truths and, therefore, in my humble opinion, should not be allowed to hold public office.”

The activist, whose National Geographic documentary “Before the Flood” will premiere Oct. 30, also told attendees that a “massive change is required right now” to ignite a “new collective consciousness” and a “new collective evolution of the human race.”
