PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has appointed a Maricopa County Superior Court judge to an open seat on the Arizona Court of Appeals.

Judge Paul McMurdie was appointed to the seat on the court’s Phoenix-based first division on Monday.

McMurdie is currently the Superior Court’s presiding family court judge. He’s been a judge since 2005 and has also presided over civil and criminal cases.

He previously was division chief of appeals in the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office and chief counsel for criminal appeals in the Arizona Attorney General’s Office. He is a Republican and replaces Judge John C. Gemmill, who retired.

Ducey is also considering nine nominees for another opening on the appeals court and seven nominees for two newly created seats on the state Supreme Court.
