Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is speculating that House Speaker Paul D. Ryan might not want Mr. Trump to be elected president so Mr. Ryan can make a White House run in four years, or that perhaps the speaker simply doesn’t “know how to win.”
“Maybe not, because maybe he wants to run in four years,” Mr. Trump told ABC News Monday. “Or maybe he doesn’t know how to win. Maybe he just doesn’t know how to win.”
Asked if Mr. Ryan is hurting him or helping him, Mr. Trump said: “Well, I don’t want to be knocking Paul Ryan.”
“I think he could be more supportive to the Republican nominee. We’re doing well. I think we’re going to win the election,” he said.
Mr. Ryan, the 2012 GOP vice presidential nominee, has endorsed Mr. Trump but has indicated recently he’d be focusing more on protecting Republican majorities in Congress in the final stretch of the campaign.
