BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - Burlington officials agreed to give their city manager a significant raise, saying he’s a key employee and worth the extra money.
The Hawk Eye reports (https://bit.ly/2ej4ra5 ) the City Council voted 4 to 1 Monday to give City Manager Jim Ferneau a 7.2 percent raise, bringing his annual salary to $147,500.
Council members acknowledged some residents opposed such a large raise at a time when the city has made cuts and employees have received only a 2.5 percent pay increase. However, they noted Ferneau is exceeding their expectations and that his job is vital to the operation of government in the city of 25,000.
Mayor Shane McCampbell says the council needs to do what’s best for the city, even if many residents may disagree.
