NEW YORK (AP) - New York City couriers, including bike messengers and walkers, are creating their own union.

Organizers plan to announce the formation of the New York Messengers Alliance at a press conference on Tuesday.

The member-driven union will be affiliated with the National Taxi Workers Alliance.

Sadio Ballo, an executive committee member of the new union, said they’re forming the union to “build collective strength to improve the appalling conditions that couriers work under.”

The 16-year bike messenger said app-based companies such as Uber, PostMates and DoorDash have lowered the standards and have made their jobs harder.
