HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Republican legislative leaders are calling for a public hearing to learn more about the state of Connecticut’s current budget situation.
House Minority Leader Themis Klarides (THEHM’-his KLEHR’-ih-dehs) and Senate Minority Leader Len Fasano say Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s budget office should appear before the General Assembly’s budget-writing committees to clarify the size of the latest deficit.
The legislature’s Office of Fiscal Analysis says the state’s main spending account has a deficit of almost $78 million. Republicans note how Malloy’s office last month didn’t notify the comptroller of a deficit in the $18 billion account.
Klarides says Malloy is obligated to “present an accurate assessment of the state’s fiscal health.”
Administration spokesman Chris McClure says the Republicans’ news conference Monday was “loaded with hyperbole” and an attempt to distract voters.
