HOBART, Ind. (AP) - A union spokesman says highway workers are refusing to return to an Interstate 65 construction zone unless a buffer is added after the death of a fellow worker last Wednesday.

The (Northwest Indiana) Times reports (https://bit.ly/2djbrgU ) that the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death of 35-year-old Brandon Beau Dewayne Fiscus (FIHS’-kuhs) of LaPorte. Police say Fiscus died at the construction site after a motorist lost control and struck him as he worked along I-65 near Ridge Road.

Ed Maher of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 says other workers for E&B Paving of Anderson have refused to return to work. Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Matthew Deitchley said the agency and contractor decided to halt work through the weekend in memory of Fiscus.
