LA PLATA, Md. (AP) - The Maryland Army National Guard is opening a new training center in La Plata.

The Guard says in a statement that Maj. Gen. Linda Singh, adjutant general of Maryland, is officiating at Saturday’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The event marks the official opening of the Brig. Gen. William Smallwood Readiness Center. The nearly 29,000-square-foot facility replaces one built in 1952.

The Smallwood center is home to the 253rd Engineer Company.

The Guard statement says the new facility contains classrooms, administrative and support areas, an assembly hall, library, physical fitness area and recruitment office.
