PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - A Virginia medical examiner says a 60-year-old jail inmate died of a perforated stomach ulcer two days after he was denied medical care.

Donna Price of the Norfolk medical examiner’s office tells The Daily Press (https://bit.ly/2e0Z38n ) that Henry Stewart experienced a “natural death,” and declined to elaborate.

Stewart died at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail in August two days after he filled out an emergency grievance form saying he had blacked out twice in less than 24 hours and couldn’t hold down food or water.

The form said a nurse determined his concerns “not to be an emergency.”

Stewart’s death was one of two at the jail that prompted Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring to ask the U.S. Justice Department to investigate.
