TOUGALOO, Miss. (AP) - The mayor of Flint, Michigan, is the featured speaker for Tougaloo College’s 147th Founders’ Convocation.

Dr. Karen Weaver, a graduate of Tougaloo, will address the audience Sunday at 10 a.m. in the Historic Woodworth Chapel on the college’s campus.

Weaver graduated from Tougaloo with a bachelor’s in psychology and later obtained a Master’s degree from Long Island University in Brooklyn, New York and her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Michigan State University.

Weaver, elected mayor in 2015, recently has been locked in a battle with the Flint City Council over trash pickup. The council wants to stick with one company, while Weaver favors another.

It’s another unflattering dispute for Flint, where residents are drinking bottled water or filtered tap water because of a lead-tainted water supply.
