SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - Sioux City residents will soon no longer be able to recycle glass as part of the city’s curbside recycling program.

The change, effective at the end of the November, comes after Van’s Sanitation, the Le Mars company that processes Sioux City’s recyclables, announced its decision to phase glass out of its facility, the Sioux City Journal reported (https://bit.ly/2edixtx ). The company cited falling commodity prices and safety concerns.

Rather than switch to another recycling company that accepts glass along with other recyclables, the city opted to remove glass from curbside recycling and form an agreement with Kansas City-based recycling company Ripple Glass for free pickup of glass recyclables.

The city will begin collecting glass recycling at a handful of drop-off locations around the city in early December, said environmental services analyst Melissa Campbell.

Campbell said she has contacted a number of grocery stores around the city where bins could be placed, as well as a main glass drop-off bin at the 28th Street Citizen Convenience Center.

The city will buy the bins from Ripple Glass for a total of about $36,000, Campbell said.

If the drop-off program works well, the city can add more drop-off bins later, she said. The city’s Environmental Advisory Board is also considering options to track usage to find out which locations are doing better than others.
