INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Rexnord Corp. has told workers it’s tentatively planning to close its Indianapolis bearings plant next spring and move its work to a plant in Monterrey, Mexico.
The Milwaukee-based company issued a statement Friday saying it has “invited the union to join us in an open and frank discussion over this potential relocation and the impact it would have on Rexnord associates and their families.”
The west side plant employs about 290 members of United Steelworkers Local 1999, plus salaried workers.
Union members say the company cited labor costs for the possible move. The average wage at the Rexnord plant is about $25 per hour.
Carrier Corp. announced plans in February to relocate Indianapolis production to Mexico over the next three years, resulting in the loss of about 1,400 jobs.
