RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police are urging residents to be cautious as they repair their homes and vehicles that suffered damage during Hurricane Matthew.
Officials with the State Police Insurance Fraud say residents should check with their insurance provider to make sure the work is covered before they hire a contractor or mechanic to repair damage. They say while some auto insurance policies may cover flood damage, standard homeowner’s policies usually don’t.
State police say consumers should always check out the background of a potential contractor and only hire ones that are licensed.
They’re also reminding residents that it’s against the law to file insurance claims to repair damage that existed before the storm.
