TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A former Long Branch councilman has admitted collecting Social Security benefits paid to his wife for more than four years after she died.

Sixty-four-year-old Brian Unger pleaded guilty to theft in federal court in Trenton on Thursday.

Unger’s wife began collecting Social Security disability benefits in March 2008. She died in June 2009, but Unger admitted collecting nearly $83,000 until October 2013.

Under, who now lives in Puerto Rico, faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he’s sentenced in January.
