CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - History buffs in Wyoming will ask Wells Fargo not to tear down its distinctive tower in Casper.

Connie Thompson, chairwoman of the city’s Historic Preservation Commission, tells the Casper Star-Tribune (https://bit.ly/2dPmq4x ) that commission members want to explore options for keeping the iconic tower up, including grants to pay for repairs.

The bank has said it will remove the tower in the spring because it is a public safety hazard.

Thompson says the structure, likened to an egg beater by its critics, was a step into the modern world when it was built in 1968. It was designed by Casper architect Harold Engstrom and a sign of change in the rough-and-tumble oil town.

City planner Craig Collins says the plan is a reminder that Casper doesn’t have strong historical preservation ordinances.
