AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Maine Attorney General Janet Mills says a proposal to legalize marijuana for recreational use would have the effect of making pot legal for children.

Mills told WCSH-TV the referendum to legalize marijuana for adults 21 and older removes the existing legal language that makes possession of small amounts of marijuana a civil infraction for both adults and children.

She that would make it legal for anyone - not just adults - to possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana. She suggested it wasn’t just an inadvertent error.

Scott Anderson, an attorney who represents the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Maine, told the Portland Press Herald that Mills never previously raised those concerns and called it a “last-minute” change. He insisted the referendum would legalize marijuana only for adults.
