CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - The American Civil Liberties Union in Rhode Island is once again opposing a panhandling ordinance that’s set to be considered by Cranston officials.

WJAR-TV (https://bit.ly/2dZh34k ) reports that the City Council’s Ordinance Committee on Thursday will hear the law proposed by Mayor Allan Fung. It seeks to ban anyone from entering a roadway or median with the intention of giving something to someone in a car or receiving something from someone in a vehicle.

The city had agreed earlier this year to stop enforcing a similar ordinance as part of a settlement in a lawsuit brought by the ACLU.

Council President John Lanni says the new ordinance allows people to stand on the sidewalk and receive money from drivers who want to pull over.

The ACLU says the proposal is unconstitutional.
