Rep. Steve King says he’s sticking with Donald Trump in the wake of a recently unveiled 2005 video of Mr. Trump making lewd comments, saying the best way to move a conservative agenda is with Mr. Trump in the White House.
Mr. King said an apology doesn’t absolve everything, but that Mr. Trump has apologized.
“And he’s shown the first signs of humility that Donald Trump has shown throughout his entire campaign,” Mr. King, Iowa Republican, said Tuesday on CNN’s “New Day.”
“If we’re going to move a conservative Republican platform agenda, the best way to do that’s with a President Trump,” he said. “So I’m sticking with him, and I think that’s the best place for conservatives to be.”
“There are two nominees: Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump,” Mr. King said. “I look at the two candidates: Which one will move the agenda in the right direction? Which one will move the agenda in a completely wrong direction?”
“I think if we support our presidential candidate and the platform and the agenda, then that lifts everybody up,” he said. “The better Donald Trump does, the better everybody everybody out here on the ticket does all across America.”
Some Republicans have abandoned Mr. Trump after a recently unearthed 2005 video showed Mr. Trump making lewd comments about grabbing women by their genitals and trying unsuccessfully to “move on” a married woman “like a bitch.”
Mr. Trump has apologized and called the comments in the video “locker room” talk.
