SAN DIEGO (AP) - Kicker Josh Lambo apologized to fans for laughing with Oakland’s Sebastian Janikowski moments after the Chargers’ latest pratfall.
Many fans expressed displeasure on social media after Lambo was seen laughing with the Oakland kicker after the Raiders’ 34-31 victory Sunday. Lambo was set to attempt a tying field goal with 2:07 left when rookie holder Drew Kaser mishandled the snap.
“I think it was a misinterpretation of what happened. Obviously I was as devastated as anybody about the loss,” Lambo said Tuesday. “No one enjoys losing I certainly don’t take it lightly.”
Lambo said he understands how it was perceived as “a bad look” that he was seen laughing right after the gut-wrenching loss, and that he’s spoken with teammates and coaches.
Janikowski is in his 17th season, Lambo in his second.
“In the kicking world, he’s a superstar. He’s a rock star,” Lambo said. “He’s a guy I look up to, a guy I consider a growing friend. We had a word, we had a laugh. We’re people. The work day was over and he said something funny and when Sebastian Janikowski says something funny to you, you laugh.”
The Chargers (1-4) lost their 10th straight AFC West game going back to 2014. They’ve lost 17 of their last 22 overall and 10 of 11 road games.
Up next is Thursday night’s home game against five-time defending division champion Denver.
The Chargers will have a new holder for placements, although Kaser will continue to punt. Coach Mike McCoy wouldn’t say who the new holder will be, but it’s expected to be backup quarterback Kellen Clemens.
