TORRINGTON, Conn. (AP) - The University of Connecticut is renaming the Litchfield County Extension Center after the late state Sen. M. Adela “Dell” Eads, the last Republican president of the state Senate.

UConn’s board of trustees has voted unanimously to name the Torrington facility after Eads, who died in 2003 at the age of 83.

The Kent Republican was elected to the General Assembly in 1975. She served two terms as a representative before winning a seat in the Senate. She served in various leadership positions, including Senate Minority Leader and later President Pro Tem after the GOP gained control of the chamber. She served until 1999.

Located on UConn’s former Torrington campus, the center draws residents from throughout the region Eads represented for help with agricultural issues, 4-H, nutrition, wellness and other matters.
