OXFORD, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi linebacker DeMarquis Gates will not play against Memphis on Saturday night.
The school didn’t give a reason why Gates, who leads the team with 30 tackles this season, isn’t playing. A school spokesman said coach Hugh Freeze would address the situation after the game.
The 6-foot-2, 211-pound junior has been a mainstay on defense since breaking into the starting lineup last season. Junior Taylor Polk was playing with the starters in Gates’ place during pregame warmups.
The 16th-ranked Rebels are trying to win their second straight game after beating then-No. 12 Georgia 45-14 last weekend. Ole Miss lost to Memphis 37-24 last season.
