MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama has to reprint 2.7 million ballots after key language describing a constitutional amendment on state parks was omitted.

Secretary of State John Merrill said an employee made a transcription error in creating the ballot for the Nov. 8 election. Merrill said he did not know what the reprint will cost.

“The ballots should be delivered to the probate judge’s next week,” Merrill said Friday.

The amendment is aimed at protecting and shoring up money for state parks.

The original ballot left off language to prevent the Alabama Legislature from diverting money generated by the Alabama’s state parks for other government purposes. The amendment, sponsored by Sen. Clay Scofield, also gives the state park system the ability to allow private entities to operate hotels and golf courses in the state.

It will appear as Amendment 2 on the November ballot.

Merrill said the employee no longer works in his office, and he is investigating what happened.
