The voters have spoken, but the White House said Wednesday it doesn’t know what in the world they were saying.
The election of Republican Donald Trump that shocked the Obama administration and the campaign of Democrat Hillary Clinton had top White House advisers reeling Wednesday and not even trying to explain the outcome.
“Just about every public poll we saw was wrong,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest. “It is clear that nobody got the outcome that they expected last night. It’s just hard to tell exactly what the message from voters is.”
The president’s spokesman said that 12 hours having passed since Mr. Trump’s victory was too little time to discern “what was exactly motivating” voters.
The White House also pointed out that Mrs. Clinton won the popular vote.
“It does underscore the depth of support and enthusiasm for her message and her campaign,” Mr. Earnest said.
