MOUNT UNION, Iowa (AP) - A tiny southeast Iowa community has tied in a vote about whether to remain a city.
The Burlington Hawk Eye reports (https://bit.ly/2el2FUT ) residents of the Henry County city of Mount Union tied 31-31 Tuesday in the vote whether to disincorporate.
Mount Union residents have been debating the issue for months since its City Council signaled its intent to disincorporate last spring. In part, the talk of dissolving the city was prompted by a dispute over paying for a sewer system installed in 2010 at the insistence of the state Department of Natural Resources.
Henry County Deputy Auditor Andrea Cook says officials would begin making calls to determine what to do next. She says it’s still possible uncounted absentee ballots could arrive, which must be counted if postmarked by Nov. 7.
