SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes has won another four years as the state’s top law enforcement officer, defeating his Democratic challenger who had announced months ago he was dropping out of the race.
Reyes on Tuesday won about two of every three votes over Democrat Jon Harper.
Harper, a Salt Lake City attorney, announced in September he was dropping out for medical reasons but did not release details. He never officially withdrew from the race, so votes he received were still counted.
Even if Harper hadn’t left the race, Reyes was expected to cruise to re-election as the GOP candidate in a heavily Republican state.
Reyes has been Utah’s attorney general since late 2013, when he took over the office following the resignation of Republican John Swallow, who faced wave of investigations and accusations of misconduct.
