WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser says she’ll participate in inaugural festivities welcoming President-elect Donald Trump to Washington, but she says there’s “some mending of relationships that needs to be done.”
The Democratic mayor noted Wednesday that 93 percent of District residents voted for candidates other than Trump. Registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 12-to-1 in the nation’s capital.
Bowser says, “Many of our residents are anxious, are angry, and are hurting.”
Bowser skipped the grand opening of Trump’s hotel, which is just three blocks from city hall, and she called his comments about immigrants “idiotic.”
She says she doesn’t regret anything she said, but she’s encouraged that Trump wants to improve U.S. infrastructure. She says she looks forward to discussing the city’s infrastructure needs, including the Metro subway system.
