Telling an anxious audience “we can wait a little longer” to declare a winner in the presidential race, Hillary Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta urged supporters early Wednesday morning to go home, get some sleep, and wait to hear from the candidate later in the day.
“They’re still counting votes and every vote should count. Several states are too close too call, so we’re not going to have anything more to say tonight,” Mr. Podesta told the crowd at Clinton campaign headquarters in New York City. “Everybody should head home, you should get some sleep. We’ll have more to say tomorrow.”
The chairman’s comments come as Mrs. Clinton’s path to the needed 270 electoral votes has narrowed dramatically after Republican Donald Trump’s victories in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, and elsewhere across the country. Despite the campaign’s slim odds of victory, Mr. Podesta tried to reassure supporters that the former first lady isn’t ready to give up.
“She is not done yet,” he said.
