STORRS, Conn. (AP) - Hundreds marched across the University of Connecticut campus on Wednesday protesting Republican Donald Trump’s election as president.
The crowd of more than 500 people, mostly students, faculty and staff, carried signs reading “Make America Love Again,” and “Immigrants are People Too,” and chanted slogans such as “Donald Trump is not my president.”
Many expressed anger and disappointment, and said they plan to fight Trump’s agenda, including building a wall at the Mexican border and not letting Muslims into the country.
“Last night people across this country said I don’t belong here, even though I was born and raised here,” said Eeman Abbasi, a junior from Orange, Connecticut who is Muslim.
Joseline Tlacomulco, an 18-year-old sophomore who helped organize the rally, said she fears she and her family will face deportation under a Trump administration.
Tlacomulco said her family came to Connecticut from Mexico when she was 8-months-old.
She is studying under President Barack Obama’s executive order that allows many undocumented immigrants who entered the country before their 16th birthday and before June 2007 to receive a renewable two-year work permit.
“That can easily be taken away under Donald Trump,” she said. “I’m 90 percent angry, 5 percent upset and 5 percent afraid.”
