They say defeat is an orphan, but victory has many fathers. One unwanted baby daddy claimed credit for Donald Trump’s stunning electoral victory — white supremacist David Duke.
Mr. Duke tweeted at 2:15 a.m., minutes before the race was called but long after it became apparent, that Tuesday was “one of the most exciting nights of my life.”
“Make no mistake about it, our people have played a HUGE role in electing Trump!” he wrote, concluding with the hashtag #MAGA, for make America Great Again.
Mr. Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard, endorsed Mr. Trump over the summer. But after a stumbling initial response from Mr. Trump himself, the campaign constantly repudiated Mr. Duke and the subject was repeatedly brought up.
To the extent Mr. Duke’s “people” helped Mr. Trump, they did not much help Mr. Duke himself. He ran for Louisiana’s U.S. Senate seat but only won 3 percent of the vote. Mr. Trump himself took Louisiana with 58 percent of the vote.
