House Speaker Paul D. Ryan thanked his supporters for re-electing him to his Wisconsin seat and signaled that it would be a “really good night for America,” as the GOP remained on track to keep control of the House and Senate, and as Donald Trump won key battleground states.
“Working for you has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I can’t even begin to express my gratitude to your generosity and your good will,” Mr. Ryan said in a victory speech.
He thanked his wife, Janna, and his three children, and touted his longstanding roots in the town of Janesville.
“I’ve known most of you for years, if not decades. We’ve grown up together. We’ve shared this community together,” Mr. Ryan said.
His victory speech offered a quick break from the bigger news on the night, as Mr. Trump picked off some of the states he would need to pull of an upset victory over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
“You know by some accounts, I was just sitting here watching the polls, by some accounts, this could be a really good night for America. This could be a good night for us,” Mr. Ryan said.
