President Obama told Americans watching election returns Tuesday night that the U.S. will still be great no matter who wins the presidency.
“Remember, no matter what happens, the sun will rise in the morning and America will still be the greatest nation on Earth,” Mr. Obama said in a taped message broadcast on Twitter for Buzzfeed.
The president said the campaign between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump “has been an exhausting, stressful and sometimes weird election for all of us.”
“Our democracy has always been rowdy and raucous,” Mr. Obama said. “We’ve been through tough and divisive elections before and we’ve always come out stronger for it.”
Mr. Obama urged Americans to come together after the divisive election.
“Let’s all agree not only to stay engaged, but to push ourselves to do even better,” he said. “To vote, not just when a president is on the ballot, but for Congress and mayor and school board and dog catcher, to educate ourselves on the issue and join with our neighbors in tackling the ones that face our communities and, most importantly, to see each other not simply as Democrats or Republicans, but as fellow Americans.”
He said Americans must remember “to treat each other with the respect and empathy and kinships that title — American — commands.”
“That’s especially true here on a place like Twitter,” Mr. Obama said in a final dig at Mr. Trump.
