DENVER (AP) - Jordan Martinook knew the best way to keep a struggling team down was to pounce quickly.
Martinook certainly worked fast on Tuesday night, scoring 28 seconds into the first period and 11 seconds into the third to help the Coyotes beat the slumping Colorado Avalanche 4-2.
“It definitely deflates them a little bit and gives us a boost to start those two periods,” Martinook said. “Whenever you can score two it’s pretty nice, especially in the NHL.”
Max Domi had a goal and two assists and Anthony DeAngelo added another goal in his NHL debut for the Coyotes, who improved to 2-6 on the road. Radim Vrbata had two assists and Louis Domingue stopped 25 shots.
Arizona won for the third time in four games after opening the season 2-6.
“This is a good young group of guys and we have a good mix of older guys, too,” said DeAngelo, recalled Monday from the American Hockey League. “It’s just a matter of time until it turns around a little bit, so hopefully right now that’s the way it’s trending.”
Also trending: Colorado’s struggles.
Rene Bourque and Nathan MacKinnon scored in the first 6:09 of the second for the Avalanche, who lost for the fourth time in five games. Calvin Pickard started in place of struggling goalie Semyon Varlamov and made 21 saves while dropping to 3-1 this season.
Colorado has scored just four times in its last four games.
“Right now when we’re making mistakes, teams are capitalizing on them,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “You hope that your team starts to understand the mistakes that we’re making, and then you get a little better at it and you can show more positive than negative.”
The Coyotes took the lead for good on goals by DeAngelo and Domi in a 71-second span late in the second period.
Anthony Duclair handed the puck to Domi, who circled around the net and fed DeAngelo for the tying goal with 3:45 left in the period. Domi scored on a chance that deflected off Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson and fluttered into the net.
Martinook added to the lead with a power-play goal in the third.
“I have to be better for my team,” Pickard said. “I put my team behind the 8-ball quick, 30 seconds in.”
Arizona lost to Colorado 3-2 on Oct. 29.
REMEMBERING MAREK
Before the game, the Avalanche held a moment of silence followed by a video tribute for former player Marek Svatos, who died Saturday at his Lone Tree home at age 34.
Svatos played for Colorado from 2003-10 before ending his NHL career with the Nashville Predators and Ottawa Senators in 2010-11. He had 100 goals and 172 points in 344 NHL games.
