Sen. John McCain added to his legacy by winning a sixth term in Arizona late Tuesday, holding off Democratic congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick in the self-professed race of his life.
Networks called the Mr. McCain, the 2008 GOP presidential nominee, about a half-hour after the final polls closed in the state.
The 80-year-old Senate stalwart struggled with Donald Trump’s candidacy early on — the mogul suggested the senator wasn’t a war hero because he was captured in Vietnam.
Mr. McCain backed the GOP presidential nominee, anyway, but withdrew his support after the release of a 2005 “hot mic” tape in which Mr. Trump spoke about women in lewd terms.
On the campaign trail, Mr. McCain repeatedly highlighted Ms. Kirkpatrick’s vote for Obamacare in 2010, after the administration confirmed that certain Arizona customers would see their premiums jump by an average of 116 percent in 2017.
