TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A long-dry stretch of the Santa Cruz River through downtown Tucson could once again flow with water.

The Arizona Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/2eOudOA ) that Tucson Water has proposed sending heavily treated wastewater down the river through downtown Tucson. The effluent would be pumped uphill from a sewage treatment plant northwest of the city and then run downhill through the city’s core.

The Santa Cruz river has been dry in Tucson since the 1940s thanks to groundwater pumping. Various city officials have talked about reintroducing water to the riverbed on and off since the 1990s.

In the past, Tucson Water has opposed these plans but the new blueprint is backed by the utility.
