MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire says Janet Reno was part of a generation of women who achieved “firsts.”

The Democratic senator says Reno’s appointment as the first female U.S. attorney general underscored her integrity, hard work, compassion and dedication to justice.

The 78-year-old Reno died early Monday of complications from Parkinson’s disease. She was U.S. attorney general under Democratic President Bill Clinton from 1993 to 2001.

Shaheen says Reno will be remembered not only for her service but also for her lifelong work to protect children and seek fair justice for all.
