DETROIT (AP) - Officials have begun laying out a plan to put Detroit schools that are being run by a turnaround entity back into the city’s traditional district.
The Education Achievement Authority, which Gov. Rick Snyder launched after he took office, is dissolving after the current academic year.
The Detroit school district’s emergency manager, Steven Rhodes, and interim superintendent Alycia Meriweather announced some details of the previously expected reunification Monday.
The Detroit Free Press reports (https://on.freep.com/2ftzWe6 ) that the EAA has agreed to pay the district more than $2 million to settle debt it owed for rent and services. Officials said many details remain unclear, including whether the three charter schools that are part of the EAA’s 14 schools also will revert to Detroit district in the 2017-18 school year.
