MARINETTE, Wis. (AP) - A Marinette County man has accepted a plea deal on several felonies he faced in the wake of winning a $31.4 million Powerball jackpot in 2009.
The charges against Douglas Miron, 50, grew out of his alleged obsession with a teenage girl he hired to clean the house he bought with his prize money, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (https://bit.ly/2fvXyRB ) reported.
The Powerball winner rented a house to the teen and her mother, but when the girl began rejecting his interests in a relationship, he began a series of threatening and criminal actions from 2011 to 2014, according to the criminal complaint.
Miron pleaded no contest Oct. 21 to amended charges of stalking, one count of second-degree reckless endangerment and counts of resisting or obstructing an officer, and intentionally pointing a firearm at someone. He originally was scheduled to go to trial Nov. 1.
He is scheduled to be sentenced in January in Door County. Miron is free on a $100,000 signature bond.
In 2009, Miron opted to receive his Powerball winnings in a lump-sum payout of $11.2 million after taxes. With his winnings he bought a new truck, a Jaguar and a house on acreage with a landing strip. He also helped people through financial hardships, bought snowmobiles for others and opened a restaurant where he hired his friends.
